How To Make A Boot Diskette

Boot diskettes cannot be made in Windows 2000. (You can, however, make Emergency Repair Diskettes in case something goes wrong. For more, go here.) You can only make boot diskettes in Windows 9x/Me or Windows XP.

To prepare a boot diskette in Windows 98:

  1. Insert a blank floppy diskette into a computer's diskette drive (usually designated A:).
  2. Go to the Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Click on the tab marked Windows Startup.
  5. Press the button Make Startup Disk.
  6. After the startup diskette is complete, copy FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM and GWSCAN.EXE from the DOS folder of the first restoration CD into the boot diskette.

To prepare a boot diskette in Windows XP:

  1. Insert a blank floppy diskette into a computer's diskette drive (usually designated A:).
  2. Double-click on the My Computer icon;
  3. Right-click on the 3½" Floppy (A:) icon;
  4. In the menu that appears choose Format…;
  5. Checkmark "Create an MS-DOS startup disk";
  6. Press Start, then OK.
  7. After the startup diskette is complete, copy FDISK.EXE, FORMAT.COM and GWSCAN.EXE from the DOS folder of the first restoration CD into the boot diskette.
